About the SHS
Mission
To preserve, study, promote, and disseminate the documentary and ethnological historical heritage of the Sherbrooke region, thereby generating Sherbrooke residents' feeling of belonging to their city and their interest in their history and helping make Sherbrooke a recognized tourist destination.
A bit of history
The Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke was founded on March 2, 1927, under the name of the Société d'histoire des Cantons-de-l'Est (Eastern Townships Historical Society). From the beginning, the historical society had a double mission: the preservation of local and regional heritage and the dissemination of the history of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships.
On April 17, 1989, the Société d'histoire des Cantons-de-l'Est became the Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke and presented the history of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships to the general public. It developed a theme on which to focus its activities: the Eastern Townships habitat.
The Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke received its accreditation as a private archives service from the Archives nationales du Québec in August 1990. The mission of this service is to preserve the archive collections, add to them, and make them accessible to the general public and to researchers.
The Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke can today be considered as the most important historical society in the region and one of the largest historical societies in Quebec.
Since May 1992, the Société d'histoire de Sherbrooke has been located at the Centre d'interprétation de l'histoire de Sherbrooke, which is the property of the City of Sherbrooke. It receives financial support from its members, the City of Sherbrooke, the Ministère de la Culture, de la Communication et de la Condition feminine, and Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec.
